The Best Cities for Boomers To Retire in Luxury

The Best Cities for Boomers To Retire in Luxury
After decades of hard work, many retirees dream of spending their golden years in luxury. With careful financial planning, a high-end home in a top retirement market may be within reach. But where are the best places to enjoy a lavish retirement lifestyle?
Every retiree has unique reasons for choosing a retirement destination. Some seek the beauty of four distinct seasons, others prefer year-round warm weather, and many prioritize being close to family. For those with significant home equity and retirement savings, the idea of purchasing a luxury retirement home is especially appealing. "Households who have a sizable amount of existing home equity and retirement savings may find purchasing a luxury retirement home appealing," says Hannah Jones, senior economic research analyst at Realtor.com.
The Financial Landscape of Retirement
Beyond Social Security benefits, which average $1,975 per month in 2025, retirees often rely on a well-planned nest egg to support their desired lifestyle. Social Security benefits vary based on age, employment history, and earnings, with retirees eligible to start collecting as early as age 62. However, for those eyeing luxury retirement, private savings and investments play a crucial role.

Economists at Realtor.com analyzed the top 10 luxury retirement markets, considering factors such as a median population age of 55-plus and year-over-year growth in $1 million-plus home sales. "The luxury market has been relatively active in recent months despite a challenging overall market," Jones explains.
